Paid User Acquisition: How to Get App Users Without Overspending

Cost per install (CPI) alone is a misleading metric: a low CPI with users who churn immediately often costs more overall than a higher CPI with strong retention. Paid UA should launch only after ASO groundwork is in place, so spend isn’t masking a fixable listing problem.

How to spend paid UA budget wisely

  • Fix ASO first, so paid traffic lands on an optimised, converting listing
  • Track install-to-retention, not just CPI, when judging campaign performance
  • Test creative on a small budget before scaling spend into it

Cost per install is the wrong target

Cheap installs are easy to buy. The question is what those users are worth. A campaign with a low cost per install and users who churn in a day costs more per retained user than a campaign with higher CPI and loyal users. Set targets on cost per retained or paying user instead.

What changed in app measurement

Apple’s App Tracking Transparency, introduced in 2021, made user-level tracking on iOS much harder; Meta estimated it would cost the company $10 billion in 2022 (CNBC, Feb 2022). App marketers now rely on SKAdNetwork, aggregated measurement and their own analytics. Incrementality tests, where you turn spend off in one region or audience and compare, are one of the best ways to know what paid actually adds.

How to spend carefully

  • Fix the listing first: Apple says around 70% of App Store visitors search and nearly 65% of downloads follow a search (Apple Ads); a stronger listing makes every paid click cheaper
  • Start with search intent: Apple Search Ads and Google App campaigns targeting category terms usually bring better users than broad social
  • Test creative weekly: in most categories, creative fatigues within a few weeks
  • Judge by cohort: day-7 and day-30 retention and revenue by campaign, not installs
  • Cap spend while learning: scale only when cohort economics are proven
Worth knowing

Watch for install fraud and incentivised installs. They look cheap and never retain. Use your attribution provider’s fraud tools and check suspicious sources.

What to do this week

Calculate cost per user who is still active on day 30 for each campaign. Pause the worst performer and move its budget to the best. See app marketing and why installs without retention are a trap.

FAQ

What is cost per install (CPI)?
The average cost of acquiring one app install through paid campaigns, a starting metric that should always be paired with retention data.
Is a low CPI always good?
Not if those installs churn immediately; low-CPI, low-retention traffic often costs more overall than higher-CPI, high-retention traffic.
Should paid UA start before ASO is done?
No, paid spend into an unoptimized store listing wastes budget masking a fixable conversion problem.
Which channel brings the best app users?
Store search, through ASO and search ads, usually brings the highest-intent users. Social can scale reach but needs careful creative and targeting.
How long should we wait to judge a campaign?
At least until day-seven retention is visible for a few cohorts, and ideally day 30 for subscription apps.
